In order to explore new possibilities in craft, we produced an experimental series of
ceramic bowls with the use of a robotic arm.
First the soft, highly responsive clay gets molded into uniform domes, to provide a
constant shape. The robotic arm is now using a variety of pointed tools to add texture
to the surface and alter the initial form. The robot's movements follow parametric
patterns and for every run its parameters are slightly altered so all the objects
produced are unique. The interference of digital accuracy by the unpredictable
properties of a natural material would inevitably lead to small imperfections and errors
in the otherwise strict and precise movements.
It was these moments we were particularly interested in, because they enriched the
bowls with a narrative of craft. When holding them in your hands, the experience was
envisioned to extend beyond mere functionality, inviting the viewer to appreciate the
unique characteristics of each piece – the traces of stamping, material reactions, and
the subtle flaws inherent in the artisanal process.
