Yasuma Hida

Originally from Nagasaki, Japan, Yasuma Hida worked as an electrical engineer for six years after graduating high school, gaining hands-on experience in infrastructure and control systems. In 2019, he relocated to Germany to shift his focus toward design, where he began developing a practice that merges craft, technology, and natural processes.

His work explores the intersection of nature and industry, tradition and innovation—drawing on techniques such as glassblowing, ceramics, and robotic fabrication. Organic materials like mycelium, insect-damaged wood, and broken tools are repurposed to reveal forms shaped by both intention and chance.

One of his recent projects, Ice Capsul, is inspired by the fact that air trapped in glaciers for tens of thousands of years is studied today as a record of the Earth's climate history. These ceramic capsules, echoing glacial forms, are designed as gifts to the future—time containers that hold not only memory, but also the potential for new connections between people, time, and place.

Hida’s practice is a continuous movement between the past and the future, the hand and the machine, permanence and fragility. His objects are not merely products, but tactile mediators—evoking subtle dialogues between the viewer, the space, and the materials themselves.
